From the Mailbox - It's all about the Judges

The lovely ladies over at Material Girls blog have been hosting a very fun design board contest where designers create a board based on a particular television character or personality. Lana from Topsy Turvy created this gorgeous design board for our own Margaret Russell's bedroom.

UPDATE: Lana won third place for this design! Congrats Lana!

"See You Later Decorator" is LATERED!

Jonathan Adler's pissy and universally reviled (ok, reviled by me) "See You Later Decorator" send off from TD Season 1 has been latered, according to a story in the June 28th New Jersey Star Ledger.

All hail the smarter heads (aka Magical Elves!) that prevailed to remove a send off that was neither teutonically terse like Heidi's "Auf Wiedersehen" or gentle like Jaclyn's "You've made your final cut" or even cutting like Donald Trump's "You're Fired"!

So, what will the designers hear when they are sent back to the workroom to pack their scale rules, swatches and paint brushes?

India Hicks intones "We can't live with your design" (in a clipped British accent, of course).

So, then, the question is... will they still be "latered"?

Also, I noticed in the new video that I posted earlier that India is not only the host, she will also sit on the judges panel.

Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan - A Happy Chic Home(life)

I'm a little slow hearing this, but TD head judge Jonathan Adler and his longtime companion (do we still use that phrase?) Simon Doonan are tying the knot!

This bon vivant couple may be living the high life, but it appears that the marriage is coming about the old-fashioned way. Jonathan's mother has clearly had enough and wants her baby to settle down already!

As Simon said to New York Magazine: “I always thought we were married, so I don’t feel like celebrating the fact that the government’s allowing me to think I’m married. It’s more like paying a parking ticket,” Doonan told us at a Couture Council of the Museum at FIT cocktail party. “We’ll have a nice romantic dinner, him and me,” he added. The creative power couple haven’t been breathlessly monitoring the same-sex matrimonial legal wranglings, but Adler’s family has been pushing them to the altar. Adler’s lawyer mom Cynthia and sister Amy, an NYU law professor, have shepherded the process along. “They’ve been incredibly supportive and kept an eye out on what was going on, and they said, ‘Oh, you guys should get married in California.’ So it was them that sort of prompted us,” Doonan said. He figures it’ll be after Fashion Week, around September 17. “But no gifts,” Doonan admonished. “We have enough tchotchkes at home for one lifetime.”

All right, no gifts... but how about a big

CONGRATULATIONS

from all the team here at BTD!

(ps - why fly to California - Massachusetts is nice in the Autumn... just sayin')

Top Design at the A-List Awards

Last night Bravo hosted their shameless self-promotional A-List Awards show in NYC and we were thrilled to see a few of our favorite Top Designers in attendance!

Season 1 finalists Matt Lorenz and Carisa Perez-Fuentes on the red carpet.

Nice to see our friend Erik Kolacz again...

Margaret Russell is simply stunning.

Designer/Artist/Rebel Ryan Hunphrey even made an appearance.
Jonathan Adler and Simon Doonan looked like they were having fun.
Not spotted: S2 host India Hicks and mentor Todd Oldham. But who we really missed was fashion disaster Kelly Wearstler. You can catch the A-List Awards show on June 12 at 10:00 p.m.

Jonathan Adler Ad for Aquos TV

I opened my most recent copy of New York Magazine and what should I see but:

Jonathan Adler applies his "happy chic" philosophy to his choice of electronics and he is urging consumers to save space in a colorful fashion. Click here to see his ad for AQUOS televisions that will appear in magazines that include Elle Decor as part of this campaign.

Tonight, don't forget to join us for our weekly "Live Party." As usual, Tbone will provide the play-by-play coverage for Episode 3. The rest of us can dish about the epiosde – as it happens – in the Party thread.

Then immediately following the episode, click onto Bravo TV.com to catch Andy Cohen's live recap show, Watch What Happens! Andy's special guests this week: Top Design lead judge, Jonathan Adler, and his favorite bloke and partner, Simon Doonan. They'll be answering viewers' questions, one of which will no doubt be about the much-talked-about "See you later, decorator" catchphrase.

By the way, Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. We <3 you guys!

From The Mailbox

Join us in welcoming Pink Navy to the roster of bloggers who are taking on Top Design!

Here is an article in the Mercury News.

Here is an item about Erik Kolacz.

Here is an New York Daily News article that mentions a Jonathan Adler installation at Grand Central.

We learn more about Michael Adams in this Telegram and Gazette piece that mentions his rural upbringing (that's Michael with one of the family's herd)) as well the fact that he auditioned purely in support of a friend.

And, my personal favorite: Gay.com asks: Is Top Design Bravo's gayest show ever?

Thanks Deb!

Judge Bio - Jonathan Adler

Jonathan Adler, the lead judge of “Top Design,” has been celebrated for the mod shapes, vibrant colors and organic eye-popping patterns that are the signature of his work today.

His business encompasses seven retail outlets in Soho & the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Los Angeles, East Hampton, Miami, San Francisco, and Chicago; a thriving interior design business, responsible for the re-design of the Parker Palm Springs hotel in modernist style with a comfy residential feel; a burgeoning licensing business under the brand name Jonathan Adler Happy Home that's expanding into bedding, bath accessories, stationary, dinnerware and table linens at accessible prices; and he continues to sell his wares to high-end boutiques around the world.

Jonathan's “happy, handcrafted, and luxe” designs for the home have become a part of American pop-culture, appearing on the sets of the “Today Show,” “Sex and the City,” “Will & Grace,” and “The Apprentice.”

In November 2005, Jonathan launched his first book My Prescription for Anti-Depressive Living, which combines his wittiness and enthusiasm for creating happy homes everywhere with serious design.
